Today's Featured Biography
Michael Hureaux Perez
I'm currently working as an alternative educator-inner city high schools- with a college prep program in the Seattle Public Schools. I still play music- Afro-Cuban percussion and explore the theater, and have been working with a partner on a jazz opera (figuring out real dramatic tension is a bitch when the chore is divided between two people. How did Brecht and Weil do it?)Have been married ten years, no children, but a huge family back east, lots of nieces and nephews, and am back there frequently, in fact, just had a ten day stay in East Harlem which was great and am headed for Puerto Rico in two weeks to help my mother-in-law keep her house ready for hurricane season. Am active with the efforts to build a Labor Party in the United States, and strengthen community organizations with a cultural focus here in Seattle, which is as stuffy as ever, but it ain't Fairbanks so it works. I still write a lot, have a blog, some books out with small press, some stuff here and there in the small press, and my fifteen minutes of fame came and went with the publication of Randall Kenan's WALKING ON WATER, which documented a poetry reading I did with Seattle's African American Writer's Alliance ten years ago.
I graduated from Goddard College in Vermont about six years ago, designed my major around urban education issues and did my fieldwork at a high school in Harlem, where I taught for four years.
