I've been in the middle of visitation with my kids. It's been an adjustment...Life...college, marriage, kids, divorce..life again! Interesting journey, isn't it?
Lately, because of the upcoming reunion, I've been very reflective of our high school era. I even went to Chugiak High School for the first time in nearly 30 years, taking my two little girls and their cousins to open swim at the CHS pool. I pointed out the balcony to them and said, "Do you see those seats up there? That's where your grandpa and grandma Lochner used to sit and watch me and your uncles race in our swim meets..right here, except we swam this direction instead because they switched the lanes around"
On the way out I saw the Gruening Award display case with my name on a plaque dated 1978. I didn't even know it was there...It brought tears down my face and I couldn't help but wonder why the sands of time have to flow so fast, ..how the lines on our roadmap had changed direction without warning and sometimes completely wash out. We found our way anyway!
I realized how fantastic an adventure the last 30 years have been since Chugiak High School... and yet I feel like I've missed something in the rush of it all. I can still hear kids filling the halls during class change..the boys gathering along the ramp to rate the girls and Tom and I chasing Eric Lord down the halls toward the office.
I blinked and now I'm here in 2008.
I felt like I forgot to tell someone thank you or something...Like I left the house and forgot to turn off the stove. Now, I'm standing in the empty Chugiak Pool hallway wanting to share those stories with someone...I'd tell Sara I had a crush on her..that she was so very talented. I'd thank Anette Dally for that accurate pencil drawing of Farrah Fawcett. I'd want to thank whoever mentioned me for the Gruening award in the first place. I'd want to slow time down and simply say thank you to a lot of great teachers and friends.
We shared some really important experiences in those late 70's. We had teachers who would believe in the potential we couldn't fully see in ourselves, and like our parents, they had faith in us even when we disappointed them. They knew we had a fuzzy sense of direction..a confused sense of self and even less cents in our pockets. But they also knew we had spunk. We were never short on passion for new adventures and we didn't seem afraid to get a little crazy trying to get to the next one.
I don't miss those years as much as I am grateful for them. They were the stepping stones to more significant lessons to be learned and like our parents and teachers before us, it was our turn to take charge of our future. Some of those lessons came at a dear price and were painfully learned too soon, ..others were priceless and illuminated new and positive directions in our lives.
Our experiences at Chugiak High gave us a some skills to tackle the challenges that life would deliver. Other "tools" we picked up along the way, but Chugiak was our place to mature, get hurt, heal, grow, succeed, dream, find love, set goals and prepare ourselves for the many tomorrows to come. In that process of learning and growing, each of us can honestly say that Chugiak High School gave us a gift..something really special to take with us. I took a few treasures from Chugiak..like a hidden crush on Sara Goese, and a year in college spent with my two dear friends Susan Dekreon and Diane Edwards aaaaannnnd a lifetime friendship with my best friend and superhero, Tom Brady!
As for the stories and "gifts" that others received from our high school years, I want to hear all about them at our reunion!
Peace,
Charlie

Today's Featured Biography
Diana Neff Cooper
After Graduation, I moved to Washington with Brady Cooper. We were married in 1979. In 1980, we had our first-born, Bret. We moved back to Alaska later that year. In 1982, came our daughter, Lacey. Brady has been an Ironworker for the last 30 years - building highrises from AK, NY, MA, PA. VA, HI, and DC. We lived in Hawaii for 2 years, New york for 10 and WA now for 6. The other years have been in Alaska.
Our Son has been in the U.S. Navy for the past 7 years and just became Chief! He married a wonderful gal and they have given us our 2 grandchildren, Brody and his sister Bradyn - the light of our lives! He has served 4 times in Iraq and Afghanistan and now resides in Oklahoma. Lacey, our daughter, married a Navy man also, and is now living abroad in England. She has a Bachelors in Corporate and Business accounting, and is working on her Masters in Finance! They stay busy traveling around Europe!
Brady just recently finished building the New Tacoma Narrows bridge here in Washington - quite the job! I have had my own businesses and blessed to be a stay at home mom and travel with my family. We have run a hunting/fishing lodge(family owned) in Alaska. I currently have a business making 100% soy candles and I am employed at Safeway. In 2001 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I went through the whole chemo and radiation thing and sailed through it. I now know what it is like to treasure every minute and to "love the ones you're with"! Life is definately too short!
