Carol Oaks Shafford

I have lived in Fairbanks since the late 60's. Graduated from UAF, stayed at home and raised kids for a few year and then returned to work.

As a family we did the Alaskan experience to the max. Lived in the woods, had huge gardens, and had no electricity or running water for years. The kids were very involved in dog mushing. Karen competed until her daughter was born. She even raced in the Open North American one year and passed George Attla on the final approach to the finish line.

Worked as the Administrative Assistant for Steese Fire Department for over 16 years. Also volunteered as a firefighter and medic during that time. Loved my job but after a very bad experience with a "fire chief" who turned out to be a fraud, I changed careers.

I now work for the Department of Transportation, Right of Way section here in Fairbanks.


I was married for 22 years, have been single for the past 12 years. I have had the same fellow in my life for the past eight years.

I was active in National Ski Patrol until a couple of years ago. I taught classes for new canidates and worked with annual refreshers. I still ski cross country and am looking forward to teaching the grandkids to ski.
