Wow, it’s been almost twenty years. Still, I’m amazed at how many of you I can’t remember.

I did my Masters in Barbados, studying behaviour of coral reef fishes. I did a PhD in Newfoundland on homing behaviours of cod in Placentia Bay. After a brief stint in Davis, California, I moved to Victoria BC, where I got a job as a fisheries ecologist. Now I mostly study migratory behaviour of Pacific salmon species, especially with respect to their survival often involving interactions with dams.

I met my wife, Melissa Frey, in Manhattan through a friend of a friend. She is from Ohio, and is also a biologist. We have three guinea pigs, one called Capy Bera (after the South American rodent), and the others are called Yogi and Teddy (same “last name” as Capy). I have seen two species of sloth in the wild. I used to always do my speeches in both English and French classes on either sloths or armadillos.

I enjoy travel and watching wildlife, especially birds, mammals and fish. I have traveled to Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, Hawaii, Norway, Tanzania and Kenya in search of fancy ones. In Mexico, I ate at a restaurant called “El Bocadito” – and thought of the brand of corn chips that Brent Neufeld and I used to buy from the dep across from PCHS.

In 2006, I raised over $5000 for the Vancouver Island Marmot Recovery Foundation by doing the first ever “Marmothon”. To raise funds for the habitat restoration and captive breeding of Canada’s most endangered animal, I ventured out into the wilds of North America. I gathered “read-a-thon” style pledges from friends, family & coworkers - a few dollars pledged for each of the six North American marmot species that I could locate (and photograph) in 2006. I called the quest “the Big Six in ‘06”. It’s been over for a few months now, but the webpage is still up (www.marmothon.com), complete with photos and blog-style updates.
