In 1990 I left the lower mainland and headed for northern Alberta. I spent a few years trying my hand at a variety of things. I lived on a friends farm, getting a first hand view of farm life at harvest time. I met my wife while living in a small farming community of about 1000, 400 km northwest of Edmonton. About 6 months after we were married, we moved to Grande Prairie, a city of approximately 40,000.
Unfortunately, the marriage was short lived, and my wife and I parted ways. It was then that I decided I needed a change, and began my first job in the oil patch. I spent several years working wire line, just one of many oilfield services. After suffering a few on the job injuries, I moved into a supervisory position and specialized in subsurface electronics.
The years that I spent in that industry were not only extremely interesting, but invaluable in getting me to where I am now. I currently work for National Oilwell Varco, the fourth largest oilfield service and supply company in the world. I work in the supply chain part of it all, but our company consists of over 50 different divisions, building everything from chemical injection pumps, multiplex pumps and industrial motors, to service trucks and drilling rigs, both land and semi-submersible offshore.
When I graduated, I had no idea where I was going or what I was going to do. One thing I can say with certainty is that I never in my wildest dreams thought I would do the things I have done or gone to the places I have been. It's been an exciting ride.
